Nathan Mahl: Heretik, Volume I (Body of Accusations)

Nathan Mahl is a name which brings me back many years and reminds me that I’m not quite as young as I used to be… When I was a teenager, Nathan Mahl were one of the great bands in the Ottawa region (how any talented band can be from Ottawa is beyond me, but there you go…). At least that means that they’re older than I am…

This is not, however, the original version of the band. This one, as the original version, is also fronted by Guy Leblanc who is also the current keyboard player for Camel.

As you can guess, Heretik I is the fist of two albums. In this version of the band, the sound, although heavily Jazz influenced at times is quite well done through good musicianship.

Although Heretik I does have vocals, it is mostly an instrumental album. One of instruments which seem entranced in a dance to take over and become the main sound. However, this is quite well balanced and pleasing for the ears.

As an introduction to the band, this is a good starting point. I recommend it. I’ll listen to volume two and talk again of the overall theme.
