Finisterre – Storybook

Although recorded in 1997 (at Progday Festival in North Carolina), this is a new release. One that we were happy to receive!

Italy’s Finisterre perform a classic Progressive genre, one which you don’t hear often anymore. Complete with flutes and grand themes! Makes me want to learn Italian in order to understand the lyrics.

But the music itself is quite involving. As with many Italian bands, the sound is strongly Genesis influenced. One does not complain, however! They do change the groove a couple of times, once in a splendid version of PFM’s Altaloma.

Another remarkable moment is the song Phaedra, all of 14 minutes long! Kicking off with a mood that reminds one, due to its intensity and overall sound of Genesis’ Fountain of Salmacis. A fantastic sound that takes you on a journey. Then in the middle, is the presentation of the musicians. Everybody plays has his solo spot. One can recognize King Crimson’s In the Court of the Crimson King and 21st Century Schizoid Man.

Extremely well delivered, it’s quite clear that these guys enjoy what they’re doing and know how to make others enjoy it too. When it was over, I pressed play to listen to it all over. You will too.
