Elton Dean and Mark Hewins – Bar Torque

Now this is a very interesting album. Saxophonist Elton Dean and guitarist Mark Hewins have put their skills together to improvise an album.

These guys started doing this to open gigs and were soon told by people in the audience that they had something here. And so they decided to put it to the test.

There are experiments in sound and time. Each player is building upon what the other is bringing into the piece in order to create something which sounds well-rehearsed and fresh.

The album contains only three pieces, but they are very long, making for an album that is over 52 minutes in length. It’s interesting to dive into the progressions of the songs and watch them build and unfold before us.

These are two obviously well-capable musicians who are quite in-synch with each other and who can breath freshness into inspiration.
