I recently started heavily listening to Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and just now found Steve Vai. (Not to mention some others)

Falling in love with how amazing these sounds are, I was definitely born in the wrong time period.

This is a rather enjoyable song from Vai. First song from him I've heard, and it was months ago. Just now remembered it though.

So I'm posting to ask this, got any bands/artists you particularly like? I'm feeling its time to experiment.

ZappaFreak here :D

Here are some fave songs of mine with Zappa:

Watermelon in easter hay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBQPkLuwy80&feature=related

Muffin Man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFIMWRXWY90&feature=related

Black Napkins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c-NMnYhM3Q&feature=related

Muffin Man & Black Napkins are from the DVD Baby Snakes - if you´re really into Zappa, you MUST have this DVD - it´s great! (And the quality of picture and sound is awesome. It was produced by Zappa, while he still was around, as opposed to much DVD-material that´s been released posthumously by the Zappa family estate.

Enjoy!

... and this is my final contribution to this wonderful thread

It´s a must see and hear; a cool 8 minute-medley by Zappa & the Mothers from 1968 with OK image & sound, so you gotta see it:

They just don´t make music like this anymore... Zappa 4-ever 8)

I'm a Zappa fan, but my links above are not for Zappa. they are Jeff Beck and Adrian Belew (yes, once with Zappa, but in this vid performing with with the ever-crafty Robert Fripp, stick-playing Tony Levin and others as King Crimson). I think these guys may appeal to your musical proclivities.

That´s cool! I never had the chance to see Frank live - that must have been quite an experience!

But at least I´ve seen ZPZ both times they´ve played in Stockholm, Sweden and it was awesome! Man, those are some great musicians - so tight! And at the first tour ZPZ did, both Steve Vai and Terry Bozio were joining in, and man, that Steve can sure play :P

Hope you´ll get a great show Tinsmith!

I'm horribly envious of you guys who got to see Frank in person.
And I'm annoyed at my boss for sending me out of town when ZPZ was scheduled to do a show here. ( I have rotten luck getting to concerts anyway. I missed out on free Rush tickets the only time they came here in 20 years because the battery on my cell phone was dead)

The last time I looked at my music collection, there was more Zappa than any 2 other artists combined.
Yeah, I'm a bit of a fan.

Man, what a bummer! :P

Yeah, Zappa has a given part of my music collection as well, there´s no other artist that compares number-wise in my rec.collection. At the moment I´ve got 47 CDs by Zappa (and one in the mail, on the way 8) ).

There´s so much variety in Franks music, so there´s almost always some record that fits the moment. And the really great thing is all his live material, that´s often as tight as any other bands´studio work. His crew was certainly well rehearsed, you can´t argue with that

I never got into the other 2 but Bad Horsie is my favourite Steve Vai song. I recommend you also check out:

The Attitude Song

For the of God

And if you are a little nerdy: Halo 2 Theme (Mjolnir Mix). It's from the Halo video games but Steve does the lead guitar on it.

For The Love Of God, Bad Horsie and Tender Surrender are really great Vai songs. Sisters is a good composition as well.

Joe Satriani is another guy who has a similar style to Vai, although I would say his music has a harder rock feel. Flying in a Blue Dream is my favorite song of his.

I've never really been a big fan of Zappa, although I have to respect his level of talent.

Of course, I don't think I can say anything negetive about SRV music. I think his versions of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) and Little Wing surpass Hendrix' versions (although I'm sure Hendrix fans would disagree 8) ). His music spans from blues ("Texas Flood") to rock (Voodoo Chile) to jazz (Stang's Swang), so there is so much to like.

Sorry, family has been over the past few days and havent been able to reply, but glad you all have enjoyed posting !

Yeah, I'm young. 18 at the moment, but I'm absolutely ecstatic about Zappa. Amazing music I wish I could have seen live, but will probably never do so.

I'll check out those songs you guys mentioned, I've listened to Black Napkins already. Man can he shred. 8)

I agree, I haven't even heard his studio music, just watched live concerts on youtube. He sounds just as good as any other band's studio, and even better ! Hes such a freak though, Bobby Brown makes me laugh hysterically every time I listen to it. Like one of you said, song for ever occasion.

@Staffan, Do you have all that music on your computer? If you could, I'd really like if you could put your collection up somewhere so I could download them, because even if I go looking to download the songs, I doubt I'd find them all. Also, I already seen that interview XD It was thoroughly entertaining.

@Grunge, Yeah, the other day I was talking to a friend of mine and he'd told me about Steve Vai's lead in the halo 2 theme. Glad to have that confirmed.
