Back in the 70's there was a band called Caravan . . .
they had an album called In the Land of the Grey and Pink or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G61UV0U0APc
The Decemberists sound like them.
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
I can honestly say I've never heard of a single one of those artists....but then again, there's still a lot of music from the 60's 70's and 80's I haven't heard yet!
:D :D :D
Vic
"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
I miss the days when bands had the word 'The' in front.
I have heard of two in that list, but have not listened to a single band listed.
I am a loser.
jay reatard is new punk- its good.
beirut is really good
deerhunter is catchy indie i guess
battles is pretty cool too a lot of drumming.
"It's all about stickin it to the man!"
It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!

I caught a little bit of Sigur Ros's set at Bonnaroo last year. Not bad, but a little too slow and atmospheric for me.

yeah, PB&J (that on purpose?) is interesting. Andrew Bird uses a lot of whistling as well.
Love the Ting Tings, but can't understand the appeal of the Vivian Girls (hate the VG over-verbed production)
More: Henry Clay People, Maximo Park, Calexico, MGMT,
others, not so new, but cool: Yo Le Tango, Pavement, Spoon, Ween, Fratellis, Gomez, Morningwood, My Morning Jacket

I've listened to about 75% of the bands listed.
Most of them are at least decent, but I absolutely despise Animal Collective. Lots of people like them though, who knows.
A few more:
Agalloch (some growling vocals, but if you can get past it, beautiful acoustic music. Their entire discography is fantastic)
Neutral Milk Hotel (Not really current, but if you haven't heard 'In the aeroplane over the sea' you're missing out)
Brand New (Kind of pop-ish, but very good songwriting. Especially the album "the devil and god are raging inside me")
One of my student's played Communist Daughter by Neutral Milk Hotel at a talent show last Friday night. Wasn't able to be there but (somewhat biased) reports say it went over pretty well.
Thanks for the list, Greg. I've heard maybe a third of the ones listed so far, and now I've got more music to look forward to isten to!
Peace

Nice! Although that wouldn't be the song I'd pick for a talent show as some of the lyrics are a bit "parental advisory" :)
Agreed. I'm sure the lyrics were totally edited a bit, or intentionally mumbled.
Peace
Here's what I've got spinning now, all proggy and relatively recent:
Frost*
Transatlantic
Spock's Beard
Kino
and one of the few creative Christian rock bands, if you're into that:
David Crowder Band
New to me . . .
Eva Cassidy
Neko Case
Plus some friends just released albums . . .
Sleutelbos (yeah, that's Arjen!)
One in the studio now . . .
. . . and one on tour.
Playing guitar and never playing for others is like studying medicine and never working in a clinic.
