What kind of recorder are you using---most of the videos I see of local talent in my area are taken on someones crappy iPhone, and there are too many people talking/walking in front to enjoy the show :(

I use a Zoom Q-8 camera on a low cost tripod. No one wants to tote it around all night. It also doesn't have any zoom so you can set it real close and have a great wide angle. Where the last video was, the camera was less than 3 feet in front of the bassist. It's for real close use.
In the videos where the camera is behind me, it's literally right behind me on a small shelf, within arms reach.
I never intended to use it as a band camera. I bought it for home use and self destruction from personal criticism. :mrgreen:
