I have 4 wire (and a bare wire) bass pickups. Coils are covered
and sealed.
If I have red, white, green and black and determine that the
white/red and green/black are correct pairs for the proper coils
then how do I know which pair goes to the pot lug and which hooks
up with the bare to ground?
Please assume I don't know.

You should be able to get a wiring diagram from the manufacturers
