I am considering upgrading the P90, in my Gibson SG Junior from a P90 to a P94. I am a big fan of P90s, i love the tones they produce. However sustain is not all that great, and i am wanting to increase sustain, and have a slightly larger power output. Is changing up to a P94 worth the money, will it give me what i want. You input would be greatly appreciated
And before anyone suggest putting a humbucker in, the answer is no. I have enough humbucker driven guitars. :)

Hi :D

An SG with P90's....
I had one myself.
Not a lot of sustain :|

Going to a more powerful pup is one way to go...
They also make P90's with AlNiCo II magnets.

The ones in your SG's P90's are more than likely AlNiCo V's,
as are the ones in the P94's.

AlNiCo II magnets are weaker, therefore having less string pull.
Less string pull = more sustain by way of not 'stopping' the string from vibrating so quickly (as a stronger magnet will do).

They also have a 'sweeter' tone than more powerful pups.

I know PAF HB's used AlNiCo II's, and I've played Fender SC's with AlNiCo II magnets in them as well.
Both are fine for modern applications.
I have not had the pleasure of using AlNiCo II P90's yet though.

Just an alternative way to go - Thought I'd throw it your way.

Or you could just lower your pickups a tad, instead of changing magnets.

I don't think you can beat P-90s. I love those things.

Pardon the ignorance, but isn't a P94 just a P90 in humbucker clothing? And wouldn't it require routing of the pickup cavity to make a P94 fit a P90 space?

I thought they were more or less the same size, just extra windings. I will have to make some enquiries, and see how big a difference there is. My SG junior only has 1 pickup a Dog Ear P90. So i best take a look, and pop off down the shop and see whats what.

That stuff on their site about "more windings than a traditional single coil" is referring to Fender single coils, not P-90s. They're quite similar to P-90s in a humbucker form factor. Not an upgrade IMO.
