I mainly play electric, but i finely have some money together for an atleast decent accoustic-electric. The only accoustic i have is some unknown brand form the 80's... it sounds like crap and i know its not worth putting any time or money into it...

Should i even get an accoustic electric? (like is a 400 dollar accoustic guitar going to sound better then a 400 dollar accoustic electric)

Ibanez AEL20E. $350 looks pretty nice (but i want quality not nessarily flashy colors) or is it a dood guitar for the money.

HELP ME!

fender acoustics are generally serviceable and nice. i have one with electronics. the guitar itself is nice and the electronics are decent. not the greatest, but it still sounds good.

generally, you would get a better straight acoustic than an A/E for the same price. but that's really only a rule of thumb and it's not written in stone. that said, if you get a straight acoustic, you can always do aftermarket electronics. i had a promag for my martin and it's nice. it hums cos it's' single coil, but i like the tone. there are TONS of magnetic soundhole pickups.

i also understand the K&K Sound Systems transducers are nice. I'm very interested in fitting my martin with a K&K transducer. but that's for the future.

you have a ton of options, basically. personally, i'd go with getting the guitar you like first of all. if it has electronics, great. if not, you can add them later.

Imo all electronics do is add to the price of an acoustic guitar, not the quality. So first you need to ask yourself the question, will I have a need to amplify this guitar?

fender?
martin?

I think electric/acoustics are good guitars.
spend the money and you'll get a great sounding guitar.
the inboard sound systems are sophisticated, allowing you to eleminate feedback and sculpt your sound.

The main thing is to get one with atleast a solid wood top. You can get a lot of guitar in the $500 to $700 range and some good ones around $400. Brands I'd look at in these price ranges, in no particular order. Fender, Atlas, Breedlove, seagull, my favorite Tacoma (now owned by Fender). I'd stay away from the low priced Fenders They are all laminate and not well made. But for the price you mentioned you can get a good guitar from Fender. I'd also stay away from the low priced Martins. Not that there is anything wrong with them I just think you can get a lot more guitar in this price range from other manufacturers. The more solid wood in it the better imo.

Don't rule out the Epiphone Masterbuilt line. I've played a few at the shop recently and was very pleasantly surprised. I believe someone on the board recently bought one of them, as well. Can't remember who...

For a couple hundred more, you can get the Breedlove Atlas series that I've been drooling over lately. But, at $600 you open up a LOT of other options as well. Probably the best thing is start hitting all the different shops in your area and start playing everything.

I have one of these and it sounds great.I use it for gigs regularly and the electrics are superb,no feed back and humming and all that horrible stuff you normally get with electric acoustics.I would highly recommend!

Mines the "ael50serlv" as pictured above.Cost about $650

I just bought a Masterbilt and I'm very happy with it. A lot of quality guitar for the price. I talked them down to $499 at Guitar Center. Here's a link to another post with my opinions about my new axe:

i have both models of the Takamine eg523s (6 and 12) solid tops beautiful wood great electronics, easily worth more than listed at MF. the 6 is a few years old now and the top is ageing nicely, i couldn't put the 12 down for 2 weeks after i first got it. give the Taks a serious look. also the Washburns in the $500- $600 range are great values.
