Well it is as much as big leaf maple is different than silver maple or sugar maple, or adirondack spruce is different than sitka, or Ozark Mountain Black Cherry is different than cherry.

Dagwood: yeah, I noticed Epi tends to make somewhat worse pics of their guitars then they are in store. Weird stuff.

Nick: my issue with 'swamp ash' and Fender's 'lite ash' is that it isn't really a kind of wood. Lite ash could be either White Ash (fraxinus americana) of Black Ash (fraxinus nigra). Then you have Swamp Ash, which can be Black Ash or Carolina Ash (Melioides Caroliniana, which ironically appears mostly in Florida swamps). Very odd, since Carolina Ash is of a different subspecies, but sold as Swamp ash just the same.

Just find it annoying that you simply don't know what you get with a 'swamp ash' guitar. Could be Wite ash (so basically the same as Lite Ash), Black ash (which has virtually identical weight&elasticity as White Ash, no idea why people consider black ash to be superior) and the somewhat different Carolina Ash.

Well, there are dozens of species from at least 3 different continents sold as "mahogany."

Richochet: ofcourse, and the same goes for quite a lot of woods. However, those are somewhat logically grouped into one big group. I have not much problems with 'Lite Ash', since both woods are virtually identical besides appearance, but having a seperate group which is partly identical and partly different is needlessly confusing. If they would call it 'Lite Ash' vs 'Carolina Ash', and just drop the Swamp Ash nonsense, it would make a lot more sense.
