OK, I'm gonna start a topic about your favorite artists and in your opinion the best song writers. I know it's been done but...I'll just start a new one. Hope it gets at least some action. I preferably have no favorite artist. Just wondering if you guys do.

Elvis Costello just might be the best lyric writer out there.
alanis morrisette, morrisey, bille joe armstrong (greenday), eminem, damien rice
I'd have to say a great lyricist out there is Tim Rice. As songwriting goes... I'd have to say Phil Collins, Delta and Elton John.
Other times it's hard to say.. cos there are some awesome songs out there, but alot of the time you don't know who wrote them! And sometimes it makes me rather annoyed that not all artists write their own stuff :?

"Iam a question to the world... not an answer to be heard."
Doesn't Bernie Taupin write all of Sir Elton's lyrics?
M&M in the same list as Elvis Costello???? ARRRRGGGH
Elvis Costello is certainly one of today's greats... I'd nominate Cole Porter as one of the best of all time

Try some of Bruce Cockburn's lyrics, especially the early stuff. Wow, talk about painting pictures with words!

I also like Chester Barrington of Linkin Park. He writes mostly about teen problems, which of course, means something to me. So I think thats pretty great.
Anyone else?

You have got to get out more Nick..... :D
Just do a google search on any of the other artists on here that you haven't heard of. Try Carole King too.
Carole King... the last of the tin-pan-alley songwriters, I think. Boy did she crank out hits in the 60s.

Best artist: Sting (read the lyrics of 'Mercury falling'... Wow!)
Best group: U2 (ok, I'm a fan... )
And here's the truth: the best songs are co-written by god :!:
