I've been playing for a really long time, and in general I approach soloing through the lens of the modes. I can play modally well, but I'm starting to get tired of listening to myself plink through the modes. I know really advanced guitarists play changes. I'm wondering how to go about learning this? Is the CAGED system the best bet for breaking out of modal playing? Some other approach that might be better? I also want to focus on building and releasing tension, and everything I read about this points to getting away from modal playing and using tensions in a chord progression to cause the chord resolutions to release harder. Any suggestions where to start?
