Here's one from way back when I was a lad

The song was originally recorded by ex-Cookie member Ethel "Earl-Jean" (or Darlene) McCrea in 1964 and reached No. 38 on the US chart. Then very soon Herman's Hermits remade it as their debut single, reaching No. 1 in the UK singles chart September 14, 1964 staying there for two weeks. The song also peaked at No. 13 in the US later that year. Arranged by Hermit's guitarist Derek Leckenby, the song featured an uptempo rendition.

It starts with a nice little intro that goes something like this
E:------------------------------------------------------]
B:---5---3------------------3---5---3-------------------]
G:-----------5------2---5---------------5------2---5----]
D:--------------5--------------------------5------------]
A:------------------------------------------------------]
E:------------------------------------------------------]

Repeat that 3 times

and then into the song proper
(C)Woke up this (F)mornin' (C)feelin' (F)fine
(C) There's somethin' (F)special (C)on my (C7)mind
(F)Last night I met a new girl in the neighbour(C)hood, whoa yeah
(G)Somethin' tells me (F)I'm into something (C)good
(C)Somethin' (F)tells me (C)I'm into (F)somethin'

(C)She's the kind of (F)girl who's (C)not too (F)shy
And I can (F)tell I'm (C)her kind of (C7)guy
(F)She danced close to me like I hoped she (C)would
(C)she danced with (F)me like I (C)hoped she (F)would
(G)Somethin' tells me (F)I'm into something (C)good
(C)Somethin' (F)tells me (C)I'm into (F)somethin'

(G)We only danced for a minute or two
But then she (F)stuck close to me the whole night through
(G)Can I be fallin' in love
(D)She's everthing I've been dreamin' (G) of
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of

(C)I walked her (F)home and (C)she held my (F)hand
(C)I knew it couldn't (F)be just a (C)one-night (C7)stand
(F)So I asked to see her next week and she told me I (C)could
(C)I asked to see (F)her and she (C)told me I (F)could)
(G)Somethin' tells me (F)I'm into something (C)good
(C)Somethin' (F)tells me (C)I'm into (F)somethin'
(C)Somethin' (F)tells me (C)I'm into (F)somethin', ahhh)

(C)I walked her (F)home and (C)she held my (F)hand
(C)I knew it couldn't (F)be just a (C)one-night (C7)stand
(F)So I asked to see her next week and she told me I (C)could
(C)I asked to see (F)her and she (C)told me I (F)could)

(G)Somethin' tells me (F)I'm into something (C)good
(C)Somethin' (F)tells me (C)I'm into (F)somethin'

(G)Somethin' tells me (F)I'm into something (C)good
(C)Somethin' (F)tells me (C)I'm into (F)somethin'

(G)Somethin' tells me (F)I'm into something (C)good

I must say that i don't find the change from C to F all that easy as I always fully barre my F's and have found this song good practice for that change.

Another 60's classic - thanks, Rodders!

I learned this when I was really struggling with barre chords - and the hated C7 chord - I used to put a capo on the 3rd fret and play A instead of C, A7 instead of C7, D instead of F, and E instead of G.

Nowadays I play the C as x32010, the F as 1(thumb)33211 (index finger covering those two strings) and the G as 355433 (played in the same manner as the F.) Playing the C that way - I normally play it 332010 - makes the change to C7 easier, just throw the pinky on!

Perfect timing Rodders! I was just strumming "(She's) A Must to Avoid" and "Silhouettes". This will be a great addition to the Hermits list! Brings back good memories of my early years!

Thanks,

You know I never thought about doing that.

I very rarely use a capo, maybe I should use one when a song has some difficult changes 8)

Shug,
Silhouettes is probably one of my favourite Herman's song. Don't know who wrote it but you have to admire those lyrics

By the way this has got to be worth the money

56 tracks! Works out to around 8p per song

The capo's probably your best friend when it comes to difficult songs - one good example would be "Paint It Black." The original chords are Fm, C7, Eb, Ab and Bb; with a capo on the third fret, you can play Dm, A7, C, F and G instead.

BTW, congrats on your denizenship, Rod!!!

Rodders, what a fun little song! I don't remember this one as much as “Mrs Brown”, that was a big hit here in the states.
VIC, here is how I play “Paint it Black” with Charlie, no CAPO. I'm not sure if this is correct, but we might be playing it this way for his vocals. Bob Jessie

Em B7
I see a red door and I want it painted black
Em B7
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
Em D G D Em
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
Em D G D A B7
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I know that song, It has a great little chord riff to it.

If I'm not mistaken its C barred on the 8th / Em barred on the 7th / Dm barred on the 5th / then back to Em with a very quick DDUDU

"Silhouettes". "Something tells me" and "No milk today" are the ones that stick in my mind the most though
